Laverne Smith

Laverne Smith, of Richmond, passed away on February 13, 2026 at the age of 85. She was born on April 30, 1940 to Vernon and Dorothy (Skelton) Young in Richmond.

She graduated from Richmond High School in 1959 and married the love of her life, LeRoy Smith, right after and were married for 54 years before his passing in 2014.

While raising her own kids, she babysat for many parents in Richmond. When her kids got older, she went to work at Sir Gals in Bowdoinham, Clarostat in Richmond, and then Etonic in Richmond where she worked for 16 years until they closed in 1999. She went on to devoting herself as a loving mother and grandmother. Nothing was more important than spending time with her family. She always looked forward to family gatherings and was the first to volunteer to make her signature dishes, such as, baked mac n cheese, macaroni and potato salads and her infamous jam drop cookies! She was the heart and soul of the family and was deeply loved by all who knew her.

Laverne is survived by her sons, Dale Smith of Richmond, Kevin Smith Sr. and wife Debra of Richmond; daughters, Theresa Smith of Richmond and Kim (Smith) Desjardins of Bowdoinham; twelve grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren; brother, Vernon and wife Delores of Richmond; brother in law, Reginald Smith of Richmond; sisters in law, Connie Smith and Martha Young, both of Richmond; several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, LeRoy Smith; brothers, Larry Young and wife Rita, Kenneth Young and Gary Young; sisters, Dorothy (Young) Watson and husband Charles, Shirley (Young) Yeaton and her husband Francis; son in law Andy Desjardins and granddaughter Kayla Seigars.

A funeral will be held February 26 at Kincer Funeral Home in Richmond. Visiting hours will be 2 to 3 pm with a service immediately following. There will be a gathering, with food and drinks, held in her honor afterwards at the Richmond Grange Hall. Please join us in celebrating her life. A burial will be held in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Richmond, with the date and time to be announced.
